Organization (Union) Structure
Membership: Any employee from any of the Companies within the Industry may become a member of COTWU (T) by paying registration fees Tanzania shilling one hundred (100/=) and Monthly contributions according to the Union Constitution. There were 12,932 members on December 2012..
The Branch: COTWU (T) is built upon a structure that consists of branches, Zones and National Head office. All the members are organized by branches and every member has allegiance to his/her branch through which he/she gets the Union services. In all there are some 116 branches in COTWU (T) established at every working place which according to law must have at least 10 employees and above. Branches can also be formed by combining workers of different working places in case the workers of one place are less than 10.
Branches must hold executive committee meetings four times every year; Annual general meetings are held once every year, and Branch general conference are held once every five years, the Branch Chairman is the Chief spokesman of the Union at the Branch, while the Branch Secretary is the main Administrator and the Secretary in all Branch Meetings, They are both elected by the Branch General Conference..
The Zonal Office: The Zonal Office constitutes the first administrative coordinating link in the scheme of Union organization. In all, there are 5 Zones in COTWU (T) coordinating branches each in its geographic location. Each Zone represents the whole of the membership in its Zone and communicates with the head office on behalf of its members as and when necessary.
Each Zone must hold Zonal Executive Committee meetings twice every year or at any other time in case of need, Zonal General Conference once every five years or at any other time in case of need. The Zonal Chairman is responsible to see that all Union activities in the zone are conducted according to the Union Constitution and Chairs all meetings while the Zonal Secretary is the administrator, and Secretary in all Zonal Meetings.

The National Executive Committee: The National Executive Committee is responsible for the General Administration and Management of COTWU (T). It gives advices and guidance to the General Secretary on all matters concerning Union Management and submits reports to the General Council.

The General Council: The General Council receives, considers and approves union reports programs and proposals as submitted to it by the National Executive Committee. The General Council submits reports to the Members Delegates Conference. According to the constitution, the General Council meets once every year or more in case of need, and it elects the Assistant General Secretaries and appoints the Treasurer..
The Members Delegates Conference: The Members Delegates Conference is the Supreme Authority and policy making body of COTWU (T) which receives, considers, approves or gives direction in all matters submitted to it by the General Council. The Members Delegates Conference may also review the Union constitution and policies and decide as it may find it suitable for the benefit of COTWU (T) and its members.
According to the union constitution, the Members, Delegates Conference is held once every five years or more in case of need, and elects both the National Chairman and General Secretary.
The General Secretary: The General Secretary occupies a special place in the constitution of COTWU (T). He/she is the only full time officer who owes his position to election by a ballot vote of the Members Delegates Conference. He holds office for five years and is eligible for re election.
The General Secretary is the Chief Spokesman of the Union in all matters. He works directly under the orders of the National Executive Committee. In addition the General Secretary supervises the administration of the Union and is responsible for the engagement and control of Union Staff..
Deputy Secretary General: The Deputy Secretary General is a close assistant to the General Secretary. His duties according to the constitution are Similar to those of the General Secretary. He is approved by the General Council to work for the five years.
